A little history

How did these gigantic metal spheres end up in the sky of Brussels? The story goes back more than 60 years to the 1958 World Fair. At the time, the traces of the Second World War were still present and the holding of this exhibition, which lasted several months, was a real event. The city took advantage of this exhibition to launch major urban works and build the Atomium. The Atomium was the brainchild of engineer André Waterkeyn.

An extraordinary monument

It was the architects André and Jean Polak who transformed the plans for the atomium into a reality. The building is the glory of science. 102 meters high and 2,400 tons heavy, the atomium is distinguished by its nine spheres of 18 meters in diameter connected to each other and placed geometrically: One in the center and the other 8 at the different peaks.

Each of them representing an atom and the whole forming a gigantic iron crystal. Indeed, at actual size, this crystal would be 165 million times smaller!

The atomium is surprising, daring and atypical, this monumental architectural work is today a major exhibition place offering one of the most beautiful panoramic views of Brussels. Don’t forget to book your atomium ticket online.
